2018 ANNUAL SUMMER LUAU CELEBRATIONS

Staff and clients were hanging loose, Hawaiian style, at the 2018 Summer Luau Celebration held at the Alicia Broadous-Duncan MPSC and Sunland Senior Center. The Luau included music, dancing, and a delicious lunch. The beautiful Luau themed decorations and festive attire provided the finishing touch! Clients from various centers and nutrition sites attended; such as a special surprise visit by Gerry from Olive Manor, pictured with Tammy Reese Williams, Nutrition Director;  Joan in her stylish black & white Hawaiian attire, who has been  a member of ABD since 1999 and just celebrated her 90th birthday;  Ana who has been attending the ABD center for 8 years looked beautiful in her flower headpiece and Luau ensemble; Peter and guest performed a special Hawaiian dance and song during the event.  From Sunland, Mary in her traditional dress featuring Hawaii’s official state flower, the yellow hibiscus, along with Mike & Debbie hit the floor and danced the day away at the Luau.  All those attending agreed, this is their favorite event each year!

Volunteers in the Northwest Valley were honored at the Robert M. Wilkinson Multipurpose Senior Center during National Volunteer Week.  Director, Marianne Ybarra and Nutrition Director, Tammy Reese Williams shared, “We could not do the great work that we do without the assistance and support of our wonderful volunteers.”

Rudy Calderon, Centenarian, celebrated his 102nd birthday with his wife Christina 94, at the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center in Pacoima. Rudy & Christina share the same birthday and actually met at the center where both have been volunteers for many years. Christina caught Rudy’s eye, they started dating and soon married. Who says you can’t find love in your “Golden Years”? Rudy was also honored by Councilmember Monica Rodriguez during the Valentine’s Day Senior Ball held at Palacio Torres in Sylmar.

The Studio City Chamber, in conjunction with the Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center, again this year sponsored Adopt a Senior for the holidays - - an opportunity for businesses and individuals to make a difference during the holidays for a senior in need. Personal gifts were delivered to over 300 seniors in our community, many of which are homebound or have no family in the area. Valley Interfaith Council (VIC) especially thanks Esther Walker, Executive Director and staff at the Studio City Chamber of Commerce & Farmers Market  - - and all those that purchased and wrapped gifts and the Center’s staff and many volunteers who delivered the gifts. All your efforts made the holidays special for our seniors in the San Fernando Valley.

During the 2017 Holiday Season clients and staff enjoyed festive celebrations at our 4 Multipurpose Senior Centers -- Tropical Punch performed at the Alicia Broadus-Duncan MPSC  holiday party and gifts from the Department of Aging’s Project Care were distributed to guests  -- Clients at the Robert M. Wilkinson MPSC created holiday decorations  and enjoyed the music and Christmas Carols performed by students from the Centers of Learning, North Hills  - - and Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center held its annual holiday party in celebration of the season, memories of the past year and in anticipation of all the wonderful things to come in 2018! Stay tuned for the completion of the Bernardi Senior Center renovations now in progress.

VIC's staff, volunteers and clients representing all four of VIC's Multipurpose Senior Centers,
enjoyed the festivities at the Mayor's 2017 Snow Ball.
